Beyond Magnus: Artist Talk with Author and Activist Eli Erlick

vergrößern

In the new installation, Beyond Magnus, Eli Erlick reinterprets the life and friendships of the famous Berlin sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld, after whom the magnus* Ambulatorium für sexuelle Gesundheit is named. Magnus Hirschfeld, along with his colleagues and staff, are reinterpreted through the lens of color as a starting point for a renewed debate on sexual health. On July 23 at 7 p.m., we will celebrate the unveiling of the work – which will be on permanent display in the entrance area of the newly opened magnus* Ambulatorium für Sexuelle Gesundheit – with an artist talk featuring Eli Erlick.

Welcome by Andrea Brunner, Aids Hilfe Wien, S.E. Eisterer, architectural historian and art consultant for the new magnus* Ambulatorium für Sexuelle Gesundheit.

Join us for a talk with activist, author, and educator Eli Erlick, who will read from her book Before Gender (Manchester University Press, 2025). This talk will explore the book alongside the forgotten past of trans activism in 1920s Vienna, with S.E. Eisterer, Assistant Professor for Architectural History and Theory at Princeton University. Before Gender narrates the lives of thirty transgender people in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, radically shifting everything you thought you knew about trans history.
